The most appropriate opening was with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton between the Bengles and the Cowboys. As nice as it was to see the Cowboys square off against former teammates Pacman and TO, the true bragging rights to got Emmitt Smith for his Saturday night Hall of Fame speech, and his Sunday night interview during half-time.

So let's talk about his technique and approach. How did he hold this group for so long (aside from talking about America's other past-time)?

Congratulations to Emmitt Smith for his fantastic career, his tremendous presence as a role model, his inspirational words, and for me...for creating the nearly perfect example of how to give a classy, powerful, and captivating speech for athletes, executives, and anyone else looking to have their shining moment in front of a microphone.

Then...the REAL madness began! Fans burning jerseys, billboards torn down, and the ultimate 'dis' an angry letter to fans ranting about the execution of the announcement, and the news itself by Cavaliers owner, Dan Gilbert.

In the end, as long as the new Power Trio of Miami come up with a winning season, and a very good run in the playoffs, all will be forgiven for LeBron. Maybe not in Cleveland, but definitely for everyone else who saw this little dog and pony show announcement "a bit" on the egotistical side.

It may just nip some behaviors in the bud, and make for more successful, focused athletes. It might even trim down the horrifying statistics quoted by Sports Illustrated: Estimated 87% of NFL players are broke within two years of retirement and an estimated 60% NBA players are broke within five years of retirement.

Before the Madness begins, and I lose all of my senses to the euphoria of cheering for the best basketball of the year, I need to take a moment to comment on an incredibly disturbing study out this week. The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida shows 45 teams graduated 70 percent or more of their white players. But only 20 teams graduated at least 70 percent of their black players.

There are lots of reasons, but which one is the real one? You decide!
